Post subject:  Looking for my old Bellett

Hi all

Hope someone can help me. I owned two Belletts in Canberra in the 1980s, one of which I lovingly did up but reluctantly sold in 1988.

It was a four door 65/66 'teardrop' which I had resprayed white with black trim, and had white crosswire mags and Yokohama A008 tyres.

The engine was modded with twin 40mm webbers, a lumpy cam, extractor exhaust, and it had a 5-speed Gemini gearbox. The interior was fairly stock (red) apart from the cassette/radio and front speakers, and a sports steering wheel.

I used to participate in motorkhanas at the old Canberra dragway and the hillclimb course, and was pretty competitive against modded Datsun 1600s, 240/260Zs, Celicas, Corollas, Pulsar SSSs, EXAs etc.

All I know is the sale was brokered by Jim Loiterton who used to live in Downer in the ACT (who himself had a couple of Belletts and a Wasp), to a "young guy" in Queanbeyan.

Just wondering if, a) the car is still around or, b) if it isn't, what became of it. I'll try to dig out a photo of it and scan it in.

Cheers

Andrew

Hi ANDREW,
If you still have or can find your cars chassis and engine number we will check our listing, however so many have changed hands, we would need that info otherwise it is almost impossible? ;)
Jim Loiterton was part of our group some years ago.
Dave.

Nup - it does not sound like one of the two Bellets I have owned.

Sorry Andrew.

I am sure we should be able to track it down with the eagle eyes of some of the people on this forum.

Cheers,
Neil

Did it also have a gemini engine, Andrew?

cause its a real hard job fitting a 5 speed gemini onto the original Bellett engine

No record of engine/chassis numbers sorry. Hopefully when I find a pic that will jog someone's memory. I took the car to the Bellett/Isuzu 'Nats' in Wagga in c.1987 and have some pics from that event somewhere too...

What ever happened to Jim? Last I heard he'd had a heart attack but was on the mend...mind you that was in ~1989...

Was a pretty standard 1500 SOHC Bellett engine apart from the cam, carbs and enhaust. Jim roughed up a fairly dodgy but mostly workable solution with a modded bell housing and a connection from a Cortina/Escort.

Cheers

Andrew,
Belletts sold in Australia never had a single overhead can engine, sounds like your engine was out of a Gemini?? :o
Gemini can be fitted, however the starter motor has to be swapped over to the opposite side of the engine. As Oz Toffa said it is a big job.

Your pictures would be very interesting to see. 8-)
Don't know what happened to Jim, or if he is still around, sorry!! :?:

The pics of my car were taken in Canberra. The rest of the pics were taken at Wagga Wagga in August 1987. Hope they bring a few memories back to some of you.

Great to see some photos from back in the 80s! Some of those other cars are still around so you neveknow for your sedan.

Good luck in the hunt!

Andrew,
I think your car is still around, it looks very familiar, I will check my records, Jim I don't think is still around, not certain?

The red GT belonged at that time to Bob Blackwell, now belongs to Gricey in Lavington, part of Albury.
The black sedan, then belonged to Warren Jones, hence the WJ 060 number plate, Warren still has the car
The green 117 in the background has changed hands a number of times, first up Tom Amos, then Barry Hughan, after Barry was Rob Dole and is currently owned by Gary Smith under restoration :)
I think the grey GT 672OEV, now belongs to Lindsay Kahler in Maryborough QLD.
Glenn has identified his blue sedan with him standing alongside the car.

A lot of history there Andrew.
Dave Maurice.
