Yeah, I was happy to be in my air conditioned shop today where Gold Coast temps were in
high 30's again. But I still worked up a sweat framing 5 huge artworks painted on
8mm glass ( 2 metres x 1 metre) :|

Hope Liz didn't melt at home or her wheelchair thermostat stop her from
Racing around :D Unfortunately Donna and I can't make the CJCC Christmas
party this weekend.. Have a good time.
Cheers, Lewis

Last Friday night at 8.45 pm ,after a warm ,humid , calm day and without warning we experienced an extreme electrical, hail and wind storm for about 3 or 4 minutes. It was then dead calm and fine for the rest of the night. It cut a track through 3 or 4 suburbs of Ballarat (we were in the centre of that track) and left a trail or destruction. roofs of houses , trees on houses ,sheds blown to pieces ,lots of cars damaged either by hail or trees , whole streets of power cables on the ground and streets completely blocked with trees etc..We had no structural or vehicle damage (more good luck than good management ..! ), just a big mess to clean up (6 hours with chainsaw and frontend loader). My brother - 200 m. away had a tree on his house and Rodeo ute, ur daugher had 3 cars damaged by hail and our son had some damage to his Commodore ute.No one was hurt ,luckily. On going back through the weather radar archives for that time it just shows a completely clear sky for a radius of 256 kms and then a small blue dot (pin head size on the screen ) appear and travel quickly through Ballarat in a Southerly direction and disappear. No one has seen anything like it before.

In the late summer, we had six weeks of daytime high temperatures of 37-43 degrees metric (100-110 regular).

But the first half of the summer was inexplicably mild. This week (now early winter), the weather man stated that our year-to-date average is ONE DEGREE BELOW average. So for every day it was a degree hotter than average, there were two days that it was below average. And unless you studied math at the Al Gore school of fudging numbers, it's getting colder, not hotter.

The reality is that the wider range of temperatures is normal for any place that is not located next to a large body of water, that would moderate the temperature swing. There are 2,000 miles of continent to the west of us (and all of those on the east coast of Australia). The milder temperatures of the previous 100 years were an aberration and we can not depend on El Nino and La Nina effects when the true normal is hot wind from Mexico all summer and cold wind from Canada all winter.

The joke is that the polar cap shifts south to the middle of the US for winter, and the equator shifts north to the middle of the US for summer.

Wow Kerry, thats extreme! I'm glad you're all safe, and its a bonus that your rare vehicles are OK too. I'm sorry to hear of the damage to your families' property. Its amazing how these things can appear out of nowhere, I suppose our friends in the USA see Tornadoes happen just like that. We are fortunate that these are rare events here.

Wednesday night's prediction was a bit short of the mark, Canberra had -0.3 overnight, an all-time December record. We had just the hint of frost with only a light bite on the Pumpkins. 1 degree colder & much of the spring garden would have been toast.

I know there are mixed opinions about Cliamate Change, I only note that there seems to be more records being set in recent years than when I was younger. The Sciencey types should know more about it than me, so I'll leave it to them.

As Belletts (and Florians) are light on fuel, I'll keep driving mine as my contribution to moderating any possible effects. Just one more good reason...... ;)

Cheers, Matt.
