to be more accurate, it didnt at all!!
after it was removed, blown out with air, sprayed out with good quality de-greaser and washed with the jet nozzle of hose and given a good drying it looked a lot better.
didnt even know if the engine would turn over, so the bores got a good spray WD-40 and couple of squirts of engine oil down each plug hole, left to soak for 30 min and she turned over with a spanner on the crank really well
so in went the new plugs, coil got re connected the correct way around, engine oil looks real clean and i even connected up a charged up battery and gave it a burst or 2. needs some fresh petrol and replacing of the non genuine starter solenoid with a Isuzu one.
needs quite a bit of work in the engine bay and some rust treatment to stop some surface rust around the battery casing but no real bad rusting of the tower or inner guard.
more as it comes

Good onya, Oz! Under 2 grand? Baaaaarrgain! I'm glad you were able to get it, and at Mrs Oz's suggestion, maaaaate! 48,000 m's is probable with that condition - pretty nice. I reckon if there's enough compression to push your thumb out of the plug holes, it'll run. Might be a bit smokey till it burns the oil out. Make sure the separator & hoses are clear & clean or it can make a motor seem a lot worse. (Aunty Mary's were chocka with crud, even the fittings on the block were blocked tight. Opening them up let her breathe, so there was a lot less sump pressure at the oilcap.) Look forward to reading more, Cheers, Matt.

have managed to get the motor to run for a short period of time and now know why the previous owner thought it would need some work and maybe a re-build. Oil pressure is not coming up to par and she has a bottom end rattle!!! it will be coming out in the next week or two and the crank will have some machining repairs done and new bearings etc fitted. reckon compression is still real good so not likely to remove the head or pistons at this stage. radiator was rod cleaned and i wont get another go as its very thin but it was 85% blocked. reckon with brakes, engine bottom end, cooling system sorted and tune etc it will cost me another $500 on the purchase price. Not too bad for under $2500. but engine could be a money pit OZ

the journey continues...
bought a new Engine Crane and Load Leveler to assist the engine repair nice bit of kit. just one problem. the extended base legs don't fit under a Bellett front end!! i reckon they would not fit under most Japanese 4 cylinder cars so one front wheel has to be removed and the car jacked on that side.
long story short the engine is out and will very soon have the crank removed and away for repair.
sure hope there is not too much damage down there?
also found a bit more rust then i first thought but that's all part of the fun

Geez that auto is super-tidy. Good buy; this explains where the new avatar came from!
Sorry for the non-response re: the trailer (this thread explains the need) but Ross told me you had got in touch with him so I didn't follow it up.
Sorry for being a slacker! Will get rego on it again soon...
Cheers,
Dave

Oz, If you have a problem obtaining the bearings, we might be able to assist you here in Sydney, dependant on the size you are requiring? You can certainly see why the littler hammers were out when you started the motor!!! WOW. I wonder why that happened, low oil, not serviced regularly, ?????? What was the condition of the oil filter? Might give you an indication.

its real hard to say, but the car was a town run about and taken on occasional trips so it may have run low on a country run. Also the oil was pretty runny, not quite like water but still thin. May have fuel pump leak back into the sump or even an issue with oil pump pressure relief. i will be doing a number of tests with no ignition and no plugs to pinpoint the cause once the crank is repaired. also have some sets of Big and and Main bearings on way over from the US. .25mm and .50mm for the Big end and standard for the mains. once i know what i am looking at i may well come back for some assistance in finding the right stuff. Thanks for the offer OZ
