Hi guys,

Whilst I have some down time in what looks to be a long rebuild, I might look at my gearbox. It's real easy to beat 2nd gear on the GT, and first isn't real flash changing down (must be absolutely stationary), so might look at the syncro rings. Does anyone know if they're available, what alternatives there may be out there?

The last time I opened a 'box it cost me $2k, so I'm only considering it at this stage...but would be a shame not to fix the issues while the car is in bits.

Any advice appreciated, thanks! :)

I know I go on about it, but what oil was in the box? I've had terribly slow boxes fixed by running the correct oil -straight 30 grade. Honda and Briggs have it available for small 4 strokes. Aunty Mary's was one.
If its had heavy oil in it too long though, the synchros might be had it. You could just double clutch?

You would imagine that something would be the same, but tracking that down would be a mystery to me, I'd go to a transmission specialist with some specs. I've never had the need, as my sedan boxes are all good. Shrek's is the exception, 2nd synchro is non existant in effect, but I just match the revs. And 1st is a crash gear, but I don't need it unless theres a ton on the back. ;)

Good luck with it,
cheers, Matt.

Thanks guys, I have no idea what the 'box has in it at the moment but while the engine's out I'll get some Penrite 30W and get the mechanic to throw it in, see if it makes a difference.

I do have a good gearbox guy, so could see what's involved...rings don't look terribly complex in general, but I've no idea what they're made of typically, plus I'm sure the machining would need to be pretty exact. However, if I can avoid doing anything, fine. The li'l chap's likely to have a greatly reduced workload in its old age, so I can probably forgive these minor issues now that its not a dialy annoyance.
