A video I found the other day. I know these cars have a really low reputation in Australia, with only one or two people who like them on the whole continent. But the ones in this video have the larger 1.6 liter, DOHC, 16 valve, EFI engine, which is quite a bit more powerful than the SOHC 1.5 liter carburetted RB Gemini. This is part of a Best Motoring video magazine review of the Gemini. They liked to run the Lotus and Irmscher models against each other on the track, which is the content of this little video.. This one ended up closer than the later model comparison. In general, the Irmscher model would have a stiffer front suspension, less body roll, less comfortable ride, possibly a close ratio steering rack, and they have a little understeer. The Lotus model would have soft springs and stiff dampers, more body roll, and stiffer rear suspension to induce some neutral to mild oversteer handling. It's 1:26 long, it won;t be too much torture even if you still hate RB Geminis after watching it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3llFstKAUY |

Yeah I'm a big fan of the later Isuzu Geminis; I've never driven one and they're pretty rare over here as you know, but that makes me more interested in them! The Holden would have sold the RB hatch here if it had been a 5-door, however as Isuzu only built the 3-door they decided it would not be worth complying and opted into a model-sharing agreement with Nissan, selling (and not only selling, but powering and assembling) the Pulsar as the (first) Holden Astra. I really feel for Holden dealers in the mid 1980s. You could imagine someone coming in and checking out the Gemini and really liking it, but wanting it in a hatch... or vice versa with the Astra, only to be told that there was no alternative. Later the R-series Gemini was dropped here in favour of a Holden Astra sedan, which made a lot more sense... I wouldn't mind one of those trippy Gemini sports hatches with the sideways doorhandles, or the later R-series with the update front and back in turbo and AWD.... but yeah, as if I don't have enough cars.... Cheers for sharing! Dave |
