I have been toying with the build of a under 2 litre sports sedan and as there are many engines to choose from and the fact that i am on the verge on becoming a bellett nut i must be a little odd so why go with the norm
I am thinking of a 1998cc daewoo engine no serious . WHY why not.
The reasoning behind all this is i have been researching this for a while and we have toyota,nissan ect that deliver high horse power that would be great candidates to shoe horn into a bellett rotory is already done and would not be my first choice anyway so why daewoo well it is a closer relative to our little bellett as the x20sed engine is based on the opel which is a holden gemini in the uk. The later veriant engine is used in the holden astra,calibra and the vectra as well as other cars in the uk. Most astras are 1.8 and vectras are 2.0 and 2.2 litre the common one in the daewoo is 2.0 daewoo use a throttle cable where only older holden use cable is 1 consideration. The sump is rear so hopefully it will sit in the engine bay without too many mods. As far as engine performance goes opels are raced/rallied in the uk and the get them to go hard. claims of Naturally aspirated 245 rwhp is not that hard to achieve and over 600hp turboed not that i would intend to go this way but in short go hard bits are available. The same engine is used in the us under the chev banner this could be the first chev powered bellett
The rwd conversion i am yet to confirm but a quick mesurement on a 2wd 2.2 litre rodeo with the opel single o/head cam based on our lovley camira engine known as the opel family1 engine is available in australia giving the opertunity for a 5 speed rwd gearbox that should also slot into a bellett without too many troubles. The next step is to confirm the family 2 will bolt to family 1. With a isuzu gearbox and the opel engine we now have a 2 litre 18v dohc with all the go hard bits that you would ever need. Even though we are not 100% isuzu we still share the family tree

or a mitsubishi/hyundai twin cam? easy to rwd and the early colts were sold next to the belletts if your looking for a vague link back to the isuzu!

good to think outside the square a little. You could engrave ISUZU in the cam cover and nobody would know.
Now you have me thinking too......keep us posted with pictures of the engine research etc if you can. Very interested in the idea.

The plastic dress cam cover is only held on with 2 bolts you have a choice of deawoo ,opel,ecotec and chev or what ever you want or leave it off. Best part is two are for sale on ebay atm brand new crate motor dressed $750 ea.
For a street car you would be better off running air con as it completes the belt system but a track car a ideler pulley would be needed.

Dizzy pack is available weber manifolds,independent throttle bodies if you want to backdate the engine a little. forged pistons,adjustable cam sprockets a wide selection of cam specs.

I like to see alternate motors for any car, having done a few in Belletts myself and may have pioneered some too at the time. The sequentional box might be going too far for street but track different. Would every interested to see how you go with possible g/box that will fit with minimal or easy mods etc.The Opel red cover looks good.

Must look up the ebay ones too. It made me look at the MX5 engine again too .......plenty of cars around but i think wreckers want more for those engines than $750

can't see a lot of details but at least one side appears to have some holes for a front engine mount. All that crap out the back might be a problem though. Some very carefull measuring needed.

coil packs will be removable did original messurements on a astra and it was clear at the rear for a track car a fire wall mod last resort.

what's that gadget next to coil pack?

im not sure i have not studied the daewoo engine yet. Research tells me the internals are the same. I can get the rodeo gearbox for $200 and a 2ltr astra for $250 from a wrecker close by. i have a motec ecu to run it in the cupboard or the other option is to by a whole car. A new engine would be a waste as if i was to do this i would bomb the crap out of the engine i am not that serious yet but if Lizzie decides to race again it's a good possability.

they have a bunch of other stuff too incl. short engines. This pic shows whatever that is on the back, it can be removed or relocated.

Sump is at the back too.

the coil packs are bolted to the head i think x22 the 2.2 ltr is a isuzu amigo so maybe a isuzu engine cover available.

from little i can find, these put out 127HP. Can't find torque figures.

I studied the mx5 too but most are 1600 and the 1800 is a little harder to find a 2.0 on ebay is around 3 grand. A rear end out of a mx5 would be well worth looking at if the rear end needed looking at later they basicly sit into it's own frame. I cant see the rear end being too much trouble as other people have run higher hp before. I try to have softer take offs and the lsd system works well for us. I have solid uni's fitted also. The only problem i had was a damp track snap both axles on the start line that Tom in sydney explaind why it happened and we are working on that 1 too.

Glenn if you find the hp a little disapointing the 2013 direct inject tubo model in stock form 2.0 ltg will give you 270hp @5500 and 353nm torque that should be enough to start with.
