As another beer slips into my "bay to birdwood classic" bellett stubby holder, with "my horse is amazing" STILL resonating deep in the bowls of my mind, this nonsense is trivial and mundane in comparison. Usually around knock off, when the job can become slow and tedious, there is a twist around the next corner. Like on this saturday a few weeks ago. I had just finished chatting a 4 wheel driver in native forest, when I followed a convoy of young day trippers up one of the dirt back tracks through the hills. Unintentionally of course, as they were heading in my direction. The irony is these guys were'nt hooning. Unfortunately the second (or third gen. asian) guy driving the 180SX was either distracted by hot young female likewise gen. or just wasn't experience enough to take that corner at 50 k's. Anyway, poor guys, very embaressed and asking for help when I rocked up. Appart from pride, no one was injured. Now comes the quizz. There are two fundimental safety errors in the towing photo. I hooked up quickly for a photo opitunity, with the consent of the touring dudes of course. Then changed possie to do the job safely after. The 180 wasn't going anywhere until we pried it loose from the tree. No prizes for guessing the TWO errors, tho......sorry B

Great observation "orphanage", didn't pick that one. So that's three. I guess that puts me out of a prize too. Seriously, error number two is potentially the fatal one. Any takers ?? Here's a massive clue. Last year in Oz someone died as a result of a strap breaking under load even with the towing vehicle facing the CORRECT way. Ouch. B. |

Strap stretches to max, hook pulls free from Nissan & embeds itself (with bits of windscreen) in tow driver's forehead. (Not pretty!) Always think safety! Cheers. |

If the strap breaks the falcon is in danger ? photo is not big enough to see what points are being used however this situation is not going to be a snatch only a pull in which case a snach strap should not be used unless no one is looking or taking photos. The nissan would not have the facilities for a snatch point any way, as tie down is not rated for any load.As for doing the recovery in reverse puts severe strain on the diffs and transmission again in this situation would not be a problem. |

Great thinking guys...all of the above. Too right Matt, could be messy, as the hook on bits are chuncky D shackles. Even though it's a tow strap not a snatch, these braided flat straps still have enough elastcity to get some sort of snatch effect if required. I guess in this instance it was a short and gentle pull. Definitely turned the ute around tho, with the cargo mesh covering the rear window. Too late after it happens. B. |
