does anybody know if the 117's had a 5 speed gearbox as standard???

the picture seems to indicate the later split case 4 or 5 speed type of box.

i think it depends on the year model, Glenn. The adverts for manual 117's have 4 speed on early cars and 5 speed on later cars.
as a stab, reckon its about 1976 onwards have 5 speed

thanks, it says it's a 79........... いすゞ117クーペ PA96 1979y

but the centre/rear section after the cast plate i thought was a bit thicker on the 5 speeds to accomodate the extra gear. Picture is not the best to ID that though but if you are right, should a 5 speeder.

If you google image search gemini 4 and 5 speed you can easily see the difference. The 5 speed has an extra bulky section at the bottom of the gearbox directly below the quadrant box.

yes, i am aware of that but the picture i have of the 117 motor is poor in that area so it's hard to know what it is. Apart from the year of the engine which is all i can use to ID it

Generalising a bit here, dunno about the 117 but the red tops were generally 2 litres. Did the 2 litre even come with a 4 speed?

pretty sure its a 2litre engine but i know nill about the trans for them except this one appears to be a 'later' trans like Gemini's had.
I have seen a 117 transmission on the web which looked more like a Bellett type so assume they were 4 speeds sos think you are right Simmo

yes, except for the shifter type.. I am no expert but suspect your box is a Gemini one. ZZR.
Is your engine a blue top 1800cc DOHC ?

The one i have or hope to get, has the unenclosed remite shifter type which goes into a Bellett easily enough although a bit tricky to get the lever up through the hole when putting the engine/trans in !

You are correct the zzr shifter did not fit I swapped this through Elky on the sunshine coast for a 117 shifter like the one in your photo
