Oil pressure sender

Hi All

Changed the oil in the GT over the weekend... Turned engine over for about half a minute or so in total with ignition coil lead out; oil warning light goes out - ready to reconnect and fire. She starts up normally, then notice oil pressure gauge not reading a thing. So turn off, check wire at base of sender unit, as I'd given that area a good wipe and clean after old oil goes everywhere when removing old filter element. May have been a bit too vigorous with the clean up? Dunno, so attach wire and start her up again. Still no reading. Each time she starts, oil warning light disappears as normal, and everything else appears normal. Engine runs fine, so there is oil going around... So what have I messed up? Is it a problem with the sender unit or the just the wire? Very hard (impossible) to fiddle with the wire and watch the gauge on the dash at the same time! How do I tell if the sender unit is working? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plus anyone got any tips on how to minimise mess when changing oil filter?

Earth the wire to the guage and the needle should go to the top, this will tell you if it is the guage or the sender.

exactly as geoff said.
they work by varying the earth that the gauge uses, so by putting it straight to earth will make the gauge go all the way across.
if it moves, it's the sender.
if it doesn't, it's the gauge.

Some years back I used to work for the Toyota dealer. When a Corolla came in for a oil change, a special tool that Toyota had was a oil chute. All the mechanic had to do was slip this chute under the oil.filter and then spin the filter off. The oil would then go into the oil drain tank. I thought this was a good idea and I made 1 out of cardboard. It didn't get all the oil, but it reduced the amount down to a minimum to clean up. Also stopped the oil going onto the steering rack mounts. Really not a good feeling when you are going around a corner and the rack shifts in its mount.

The chute lasted about 3 changes.

Check your wire on the distributor also while your doing the oil sender wire. Both wires are prone to going hard and cracks appear in them. I'v replaced mine in nearly all my cars. Looks like christmas lights under the bonnett. The wire is colour coded. Black with red trace. Goes to negative side of coil. If in doubt, replace the complete wire . A couple of terminals and a length of wire and some insulation tape is all you need.

Thanks Dave.

Yes I know the feeling of sloppy steering rack mounts all too well... Have just last month replaced with new rubber mounts, so she's nice and tight now, and I can approach corners with a new found confidence! I'll have a go at making a chute like yours for the next oil change. It has to be better than just stuffing rags all around under the cannister hoping to catch as much as possible.

Hey on the topic of oil filters, I've just picked up a few at the extravagant price of $8/filter from my local tractor shop - Bare & Co, part # B7701, suits Massey-Ferg grey engines (and apparently many others too). Fit perfectly. Old guy who owns the joint says they're from the UK and ain't likely to go out of stock anytime soon. Look to be of good quality too. Thanks to Dave Carey for putting me on to these. I'll put a post in 'parts interchange' also; don't think this one has been mentioned.

Thanks for the heads up on the dizzy wire too - will check.

Have known about the filters for quiete some time. Bought 1 to fit to my sedan before I did the engine up.
Ended up converting it to spin on. Same as Chevy. LUV. Fleetguard LF566 is part number.
'HARRY' the Wasp might endup getting it. Project No. 3. WAAAAAAY down the track. Just past the GT.

Hey Paul,

I bought a couple of B7701 filters like you have but they only came with one thin cannister seal which isn't thick enough.

I already had a Ryco R2154 oil filter from my local Cheapa Auto Spares which is the current Ryco equivalent for the Sakura O-1803 and I'm fitting it today. I think its really close to the original R2111p when I compared it to one of Davo's used ones. It came with the two square profile oil seal rings plus wide rubber seals on the top and bottom of the actual filter instead of small fibre ones (No sludgey oil bypass)

'Harry' Is my Dads name. The Wasp that He bought in '65 is in my possession. 'Neville' is the other Wasp that I bought
after the "09 nationals. Younger vehicle but not worth doing up. Lots of spares for Harry.
There's gotta be a female Wasp. Can't be all males. After all. The production line would not have functioned.

The sedan on the trailer behind Gricey's 250 in gt Orph's picture above is 1 of them.

Obviously the pics worked. Going to do some research in all my photos so as I can do an introduction
