Post subject: | NO SPARK ? |
I have just changed the points in my Wasp, which were working but showing signs of wear, only to have NO spark at all. I have checked an re-checked, that I have connected everything. I have since replaced the coil and condenser, just in case one of them coincidentally packed it in at the same time. Still nothing. I decided to remove the points AGAIN, but accidentally had left the ignition on. As I was undoing the screws that hold the points in I saw a spark at the contact points ??? So curious, I left the screw lose (those who know me say I have a screw loose ) and turned it over. SPARKS ! SO if I do it all up, I have NO spark, but if I leave it loose the car runs. Has any one ever come across this before? Or have any ideas ? Thankshttp://www.bellett.net/forums/pos ... post&f=36# |

When you screw down the point you are earthing them. It is designed to earth through the points some how you are bypassing this. so something between when they work and don't it should not be earthing there You need to work out why Whether it is supposed to be insulated or no points gap The points have a pig tail wire also check that no earth is being bypassed. |

Does anyone have Bosch part number for the points ? I have tried another new set with the same results. I then cleaned up the old set and refitted them, and no problems. Makes me wonder if there is something different in the new points, even though they look the same. |

Warren, They should be Bosch GH203, they are the ones I use, they also fit Datsun 120Y and 200B. I think the late cars had a different distributor, might be the issue?? Dave. |

Thanks Dave, that is the same part that I have here. I don't understand why two sets of new points don't work, while the old ones do. |

Does anyone use a different brand of points. If so any part numbers I cold use, and or suppliers. Bursons only supply the Bosch ones. Thanks |

I just got Bursons to send out two more sets of Bosch points, and fitted one set in and it works. Maybe I was just lucky enough to have two faulty sets ???? |

Had you tried giving the contacting surface of the points a quick scuff or file. Put a brand new set in the Morris Minor once same story no spark. After a while of messing around that was it. Just a coating to prevent corosion whilst sitting on the shelf?? |

Good thinking nephew! Always clean the contact surfaces with petrol before fitting. I once had the problem of an intermittent fault in the little wire. Depending how it rested it carried current or failed to. Replace the old wire to eliminate this variable. Also shine up all brass joints. I know how confounding these faults can be! Cheers, Matt. |
