Hi guys

So yesterday my chev luv developed a decent coolant leak which is coming from under the water pump.
I haven't had a chance to get the pump off and have a look yet as I fly back to work for 2 weeks today.

It is a G161 powered thing and I understand that pumps are pretty much impossible to find.
Is there rebuild kits or gasket kits available?

Anyone know what the likely cause is? I am hoping it is just a gasket blow out however I have a suspicion that the pump isn't working properly.

Nick

Anyone?

Heater wouldn't work which makes me think the pump wasn't functioning properly.

have a look in these two threads, the water pumps are not that easy to come by.

my idea if one of mine dies is to run an electric water pump.

Yeah ok, thanks guys.

I had thought about an electric pump but would prefer originality if possible.
I guess I will get it off first and assess the damage :(

Water pumps are a bit of a problem. Have a look, and of the coolant is coming from behind the pulley then the seal is probably gone. I am fortunate in that all on my cars are ok. I have a few spares, but they are untested, and the only way to do that is fit up to a motor and run until the pressure comes up.
I would be able to send you one and hope for the best if you like.

Cheers, Matt.

Hi Matt

That is an extremely generous offer considering how hard they are to find!

I will be back home in just under 2 weeks and will be able to investigate then.
I still have my fingers crossed for the best but I am pretty doubtful.

I would of course pay whatever you feel is reasonable if you were happy to sell one of your pumps?

I have bought two new water pumps through import monster Over the years. They come up occasionally. There is a second hand one on there now for a ridiculus price of $327!...search under 1600GT, page 26, or PR91( that search shows 2 new ones but aren't the right ones).

I have bought them for about $70 but the auction commission adds $25 then add very expensive freight means they end up costing about $180.

Anyway, I hope this helps Nick.

Cheers,
Lewis.

Thanks Lewis

I had been searching on Import Monster but hadn't come up with anything.

That pump would be around $500 by the time it was delivered!

I spent about 4 hours yesterday calling everywhere in Australia looking for a pump or rebuild kit to no avail.
times like these I hate the G161Z motor as it makes finding parts for the OHV motor that much harder.
Most people tell me they are the same motor. I once had to take a Repco employee out to the Luv in the car park to prove him wrong!

I cant see any obvious issues and there is no play in the shaft.

What is the small hole in the underside of the housing for?

The leak seems to be coming from the hole in the casing. So I take it this is a pressure releif style hole? In which case water must be getting past the shaft seal in order to leak into this area?

I just reassembled everything with new gaskets and filled the radiator, it immediately started leaking from this hole. Didn't need to start the car.

Farmer: I would happily purchase one of your pumps if the offer still stands.

Hey Anthiron - try searching for this part number: GMB-140-1130.

I just picked up the last one from Summit Racing . com and tried to order more after I received and confirmed it was the correct pump. Unfortunately they could not supply any more.

I might add that it took me 3-6 years to get this one mate - it cost just $41 US

Here is a link to the one I purchased:
http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/g ... /overview/

It does now say unavailable but keep on searching with that part number mate.

Cheers,
Good luck
Neil

Thanks Neil

I have tried searching for a few different part numbers I found (Including that one) but I am yet to find one in stock.
Every now and then I think I have gotten lucky only to email and find out that it is out of stock or the incorrect pump. :(

Has anyone had any luck converting the pump shaft to take modern seals?

I think someone has a contact here who can recondition them.

My problem was the housing behind the impeller was corroded - so it may not have been salvageable.

Cheers

Hi Anthiron

You're close with your assessment of the hole on the underside of your water pump. Most pumps in the 50s and 60s and even later had these holes in the bottom so if a seal went, water ran out before it got to the bearing and wrecking it so you have more than likely done a seal in your pump. As to availability I'm not up with that but someone might be able to suggest a compatible part so that the existing pump could have one fitted. Good luck.
