I was at pick a part in Cambelfield Melbourne today and sighted a 1964 Bellett and a Bellel both cars are in very bad condition. The bellel looks like a sports model it has twin nikki carbies and extractors and a 2 litre motor and colunm shift. I inquired about buying the Bellel but was told that under the new vic road rules the car is classed as a wright off and it's next trip will be to the crusher and can not be sold but feel free to take what you won't from the car like the engine $215.00. I explained to the chap that this car is probably the rarest car in the yard but he said it's out of his hands, he told me that 4 cars in total came in 3 belletts and the bellel 2 belletts went to the crusher straight away as they stuffed the other 2 went to the yard but wont be there for long hope someone gets some bits before there gone ( get the motor for the wasp Craig)

just makes you cry when stuff like this ends up at the wreckers. There sure was a Sport Sedan motor that went into the later Bellel. Make a great addition to the sedan
as you cruise around the Adelaide Hills.

Is anyone going to save the motor???

I would be happy to bring it home if someone can get to the wreckers and remove engine and gearbox. And happy to pay for engine and maybe even a slab or 2 for the hard
working removal crew.
Can throw it onto the trailer when i come over to Melbourne in a few months time.

Thanks

OZ

Wow! I knew there were Bellel (plural) about - what a shame. Sounds like BS from the yard owner - he'd be making more money in parts and scrap than as a job lot. Of course, I've no idea about Victoria's new rules, but any write off (financial or otherwise) can be road registered once road-worthied in SA, so long as it is inspected by Regency. Maybe he can sell to a non-Victorian??? Hehe.

not too hard at all to register a write of here in SA, im just waiting for all the newer vehicles that have been written off in the floods recently to start appearing in SA. It would be cool to save the bellel as it is a fairly rare car here.

in qld we stat write off these cant be registered and repairable write off. I thought it was a nation wide thing to stop rebirthing cars and cut and shuts ect. they can be sold you cant put it back on the road, but the older cars dont go on record. Tell them you want to put a chev in it and use it for a drag car.

unfortunately each state has there own rules, had to tell a customer at work the other day that the $45,000 car with low milage had no warranty. customer couldnt believe it had been written off in another state, repaired and sold here as an excellent low mileage vehicle. It happens alot with cars here, we have a large crash shop not too far from us that gets a truck load of interstate write offs delivered regularly and then they get sold at the car yard across the road from them.

no guys, thats the rules here in vic.
a statutory "write off" thats sold at auction can be re-rego'd, but after a full inspection.
if it's a total write off and lands in a wrecking yard, it'll only leave the yard as a steel pancake and gets shipment to china to become 10,000 hyundai ash trays.

and the engine and box is being saved as we speak for a Wasp project in Melb.

cheers.

Well that will be one unique Wasp once it is all done. That is the first set of twin Hitachi carb setup i have seen in the wild.
Good to see they will still be about the place in the wild...

you guys in Melb get all the good brakes. but you didnt want them, did you?

yer but what cheeses me off about this is the car is not smashed beyond repair if it was a magna or camry in the yard big deal there not in danger of extinction yet .You only need to look at the old yellow cabs that get reregoed in Melbourne some of these cars have had more hits than Elvis and the Beatles put together and have nearly a million k's on the clock in my opinion vic roads should round these up and crush them instead of an old bellett and bellel.

Agree totally Gt, but once the car is there thats it!
need to stop them getting towed to the wreckers in the first place.
i have started to advertise a "Wanted Belletts Isuzu Florian GT and Wasp Ute" in our local Sat morning paper
here in Adelaide so that maybe we can stop some of these cars being crushed.
just cant believe that a Bellel ended up at the crushers....

In SA, the Regency Road Worthy inspection and securities check prevents rebirthing.

The wrecker would have applied for the write-off, so this guy obviously really wants to scrap them.

More astute scrap dealers over here are offering old cars for sale for the quick cash turnover...that's how I got my Honda 7 Coupe. The same guy had several 240K's on offer too.

Two other thing that could be done. First, put a wanted ad in "AllClassifieds".

Next, I have an ad in Just Cars for Hillman owners who might want to start a local (Canberra) club. I get two to three calls a month from people all over Australia wanting to dispose of old Hillmans. Including one from the occasional clearer of farm machinery who has found something he thinks is too good to be crushed. I can't save all these cars, but I have saved a few by letting other people know about them.

Cheers, Vic

This is just a tragedy. I find it hard to understand.
Who in officialdom would know or even care weather it was sold as a parts only wreck or crushed?
There must be some way to save it. It is possibly the only one here.
If you can plead harder I'll find some money.
Can't....let....it....go!
Sad now.
Matt.

Well, he has to take it somewhere to be crushed...maybe follow him and throw money at the scrap metal merchant? It's likely the car will be stripped of its ID by then. Surely money talks though?

Gt 161, if you are back there & could get the cablight, Glovebox lock & entire shift linkage from the Bellett I would like to buy them. Also suggest saving that straight looking bonnet.
Thanks, Matt.

I'm pretty sure the Pair of them came from the North Western of Melbourne.
About 10-12 Years ago I offered to buy a Bellel(Same as That) from a Bloke in Keilor,
He had about 6 Complete GT Engines, A fair Few Gearboxes(1 was a GT-R Box, I got that) & Heaps of other Random Bellett & Wasp Stuff. His Back Yard was Full of Bellett Shells & The Bellel was in the Shed.
