Post subject:  broken rear axle

Has anybody ever seen a Bellett snap an axle? I don't mean a rear uni or the half shaft, the actual axle where it goes thu the rear trailing arm. :oops: and if so how whot caused it? and whot would cause it do do both at same time? :oops:

I haven't ever seen a broken axle. A mate with a heavy duty clutch and worked motor drove off a kerb under power once & smashed a uni.
Could be something to do with the clutch release mechanism? Sorry - Rude!
I immagine if the axle could drop below the working limit of the uni on lift-off, the bend force might do it. I suppose they're all old & have had a lot of forces act on them in their lives, and were only designed for 95-ish HP.

:shock: Did the rear wheels come off the ground,guess you were not
rallying, ;) have heard of snapin uni's when car becomes airborn,so they
put straps under the back axles,you know I've got one out if you need

No airborn action :cry: i left the 1st one when i hit second gear from the start grid and the second one about 200 meters from the 1st. The 1st one smashed the uni and axle the second one the uni still in one piece attached to half a half shaft lying lonley in the middle of the track. Got a cheer from the crowd when it was handed back on my way down the hill and it was explained to me from the guy that won our class i had a better trophy than his :lol:.
The big problem is it is we can't work out why it happened :?: I have a better quality uni's on the way when they are fitted we will do some testing. i destroyed 2 uni's the day before :shock: The 1st few trips out i had no problems i dont do burn outs and the track was wet. The only thing is the uni's that were first fitted were chinese i ordered toyo brand but alcheapo's turned up so i fitted them due to lack of time to get other ones. I am hoping that the axels were stressed when the uni's went.

Are you running a locked diff? If so, the forces could twist & weaken an axle, I reckon. Then again, I've known others with them & they've been o.k.. You will need to have 1 wheel off the ground whenever you want to turn!
No idea really, just surprised!

Not very helpful unless you have swapped parts around, but some advice I have learned along the way:

Axles spend all their life turned in mostly one direction (ignoring reverse for now). If you grabbed a spare off another car and put it in the wrong side, they are very easy to snap since you are now applying force in the opposite direction to what it has spent it's life doing.

Moral is label your spare parts well!

I took beethoven to grafton on the weekend to try and see if i could bust some axles :D and failed. The car only came off the hoist day's before and after lots of theory's trying to be proven the only thing :D we could come up with was dodgy uni's the thing is we tried v8 holden that were too big and in desperation last time i went to our local parts shop with a sample and recieved a chinese brand. I think when they snapped in half they stressed the axles with the diff locked and tried to push them in a oval motion :?: With some local testing and some unknown markings on the road out the front after fitting some hardy spicer solid uni's it's fine.
After 4 runs at Grafton it was best to bring it home while all was good :? as repaires before leyburn would clash with other plans.
0pr91 i detuned that v8 ;)
