Hi guys,

Thought I'd share this little time lapse that I took over the weekend as a mate and I pulled apart a 1966 Bellett sedan (auto) that was destined for the scrap yard.

The car was one owner, which on the surface sounds fantastic... until you realise she couldn't drive, used to park by feel and used the interior to transport shells and sand around... Unfortunately the rust and bog in the rear quarters alone is enough to make it scrap metal and that was before we pulled radiator and looked at the cooling system. The water pump was seized and the alloy (both the pump and thermostat) just turned to powder when we touched them... Then we drained the oil... I have never seen so many chunks in oil so black, neither have I seen so little come out of a car that was 'running' when we got it.

I don't recall what the sump should hold but we only got 1.5L out of this one, the rest had just seeped away.

Anyway, enjoy part 1 and part 2 :)

Cheers,
Ross.

Doing that exercise craze again I see, 2ldohc...BELLETTASIZE !! Much enjoyed !!

From what you say, it makes one realise how tough these mites are, being driven on it's last legs like that ! Lots of spares anyway.

btw, it's about 3.2 litres of oil normally I think, in a fairly shallow sump. So I don't think 1.5 litres of gunk would have been getting around the motor very well.

That also looks like a fairly snotty donk you got out of her ?! Nice orange Mazda / Datsun, what is it ???

The little orange car is a 1974 Mazda RX2 in infinitely better condition than the Bellett!

Hmmmm, sounds like it was a miracle it kept on keeping on for as long as it did!

Cheers,
R.

Further to that story, the Mrs Turner who sold it to me told me her sister was taken to the Adelaide Motor Show by their Dad and told to pick a good, first car and he would buy it.

She picked the Bellett!

She went on to become a spinster who also hoarded a LOT of 1960s fashion magazines....

Anyway, Mrs Turner had the role of executor of her will; she too was taken to the Adelaide Motor Show a couple of years later and bought an early-spec TA22 Celica. Like the deceased Bellett lady (whose name escapes me; apologies... perhaps I should just check the original books and brochure - w00t), Mrs Turner kept her car for the long term and still has it today, however her TA22 is heaps better condition that the poor old Bellett.

Cheers,

Dave

Hey Ross, that's very green grass you've got there.

Particularly liked the menacing movement of the tree's shadow in part two. Reminded me of leaking oil...

Nice work.
