I had a teardrop sedan years ago that they tried to defect off the roads. Back when they were trying to get all the old cars off the NSW roads (1991 ? ). The copper pulled me over because he thought my wheels were not legal. When he couldn't find the specs for a Bellett in his folder, he wrote out a defect slip, giving me seven days to present the car to the RTA. When I got there, he had written it out for a full inspection, not just the wheels. Well, they directed me to drive it up onto their hoist......bang. Bottomed out on the sway bar mounts. NOT a good start. They ended up finding a few things, including GROUND CLEARANCE, and HEADLIGHT HEIGHT (min 600mm form centre to ground...check that one out). They also had no specs on the Bellett, so told me my non standard wheels ( how did they know what was standard ?) would be deemed illegal, unless I could provide the proof otherwise. So much for innocent 'till proven guilty! So not wanting to get beaten like this, I took the car home and fitted a standard set of springs ( it had GT ones ). Measured the headlight height, .....still way too low. ???? I fixed the few other minor things they picked ( some of which don't matter today ), got me some specs from a late model GTR ( disc brakes, wider front track and wheels ), loaded three 20lt drums of lead weights into the boot and went back to the RTA. So I am met by the same inspector, who directs me to drive onto his hoist....just made it..whew. He checks over the few minor things.....all good. We discuss the wheels and I show him the specs I had from the GTR. He takes out his tape and measures the wheel track....5mm over the allowed increase. "Close enough" he said. Then he measured the headlight height....592mm, "still too low" he says with a big smirk on his face, then he holds the tape a little way from the end and re-measured..."605mm. Perfect !" he said. " Now open your boot for me" which I did sheepishly, to be met with raucous laughter from him and his colleagues. He signed off on my defect, and all was good. The GT springs went back in that afternoon. So I doubt that any of us fully comply with the regulations, if even a sedan is too low. I still get a laugh out of that one. |

My GT is that low. Was even commented on at Merimbula and I was asked how I did it coz it's lower than the rest.... Reynolds / Ferguson car is sits the same ( I took the original stuff out for safe keeping). Never had a prob *touch wood* with cops, road worthy, anything. They are to low for min height, but being as old as they are, very min use, there both clean and safe and there's no specs about (well.... I have them, but wasn't sharing them!), the RWC guy wasn't fussed. The cops only care if u attract attention, so act or drive like an idiot and they jump on u. Behave and they really don't care how low, loud, whatever your car is (in my experience anyway). |

I got pulled over 5 times in Donkey within 42km one morning over the easter long weekend as I headed to friends place. None of them seemed to care that Donkey was nearly sitting on the bump stops or that I overtook one of the police cars (unmarked car ) at 70mph on the highway...... the only thing they were concerned about was that they thought my number plate was falling off the chain fools them every time. Only one of the officers had an issue with it and told me in no uncertain terms to 'SCREW IT ON!' but I think she was just grumpy that she had to work the long weekend (as did I) so I just smiled and said 'no worries mate I'll sort that out pronto for ya' then gave her a wave and took of like a scolded cat it's still hangin on the chain |

Only time i ever was pulled up was when i had no front number plate. Nor rear. Back in '93. Just driving home from rego office. Told to put them on straight away.(I forgot to take screw driver to rego office) |
