Hi all,
Am considering purchasing this car - believe it is a genuine GTR. Appreciate any feedback asap. Hoping to pick it up for US$13K. Chassis number is PR91-4211346. 1970. Originally white apparently.
Thanks,
Hemmers

We've had some heated discussions about this subject. The short answer is "We don't know, but most of us would say it looks pretty genuine and if it isn't we would never know."
The outward appearance is convincingly GT-R. The black paint on and around the hood looks correct. A lot of cars seem to be missing the black paint on the tops of the fenders and at the base of the windshield. It's really shiny paint, so it's probably not original. The engine compartment is old orange paint. If the car was originally white, it might have been completely repainted orange, but it looks like it was originally orange to me. The brake vacuum pump lacks the large hexagonal diaphragm.
You have a picture of the VIN or chassis number, which is good. The controversy is that the GT-R is referred to in paperwork as a PR91W. One side of this debate maintains that the number printed into the firewall of the car should be "PR91W-#######". The other side says that the serial numbering system used four digits for the model uses four digits and that only a change in the displacement, body configuration, or later the drive train layout, would bring about a change in the model number. So the PR91 four digit number is shared by both GTs and GT-Rs.
No picture of a chassis fire wall has yet been found with a PR91W in it. The Japanese owners who have been asked have said that according to their understanding, and what is stamped on their cars, the number printed in the fire wall is PR91 and there is no W. They add that they use other structure, equipment, or other details that are hidden up under the car, which show the difference between the GT and GT-R, and are less well known and possibly more difficult to change, modify, retrofit to change a car over to look like a GT-R. And, the Japanese owners who were asked seem resistant to telling us foreigners what these details are.
