fitting sigma discs to bellett

Hyundai.......

Didn't have a tape measure with my but all the rotors appeared about same thickness so the calipers might 'work' with Magna rotor.

All pics are just what i saw, NOT tried or measured !

rotor does not slip over the hub.

Not much time to do anything more, it was raining also.

Has anyone ever measured or tried to find an alternative steering knuckle/stub axle that will connect to the bellett balljoints and steering while also providing a disc brake upgrade???

that's probably a bigger ask than finding rotors and callipers i think, especially as most cars these days and even for some time, are FWD.

don't even think about a different upright assembly. there's alot more to it than just what fits the balljoints as any geometry change in the steering arm area will make it dangerous to drive at best, and downright lethal in the worst... ask any real race car builder and they'll tell u!
i agree with Glenn... a disc and caliper conversation is much easier, and has been done enuf times now that 'reinventing the wheel' so to speak is not required.

Hi all,

Reading this thread with interest.

2 questions

1. Can you still buy new magna discs in Australia that slip straight onto the drum hub? (Canny get them here in Scotland)

2. My car has great 13" alloys which i must keep, so when you say the wheels must be 14" what is to stop you from machining the disc down to a slightly smaller overall diameter, then making the caliper bracket to suit so as to allow the 13" wheel option? (Here in Scotland you can machine parts without the authorities going nuts). The calipers I am going to use are from a Mazda mx5 (miata)which has 13" wheels so they are relatively compact.

Jeff i am sure you will find the the mx5 stud pattern is not 114.3 so your rims will need to be drilled to suit. I have looked at transplanting mx5 running gear into a sedan one of many options :?: you could possibly fit this with no sump mods? toyota has starter on the correct side, ca18 nissan steel sump,sr20 alloy toyota and nissan are both front sumped still looking.
The magna rotors are still available here.

The TP Magna (approx 05/89 - 03/91) rotors are on ebay around $60 a pair. They are 4 stud. I understand you have to use a 14" rim.
I think Brett uses the rear Magna rotor on his race car.

Here are some pictures I took last saturday (sad isn't it) of the Magna brakes and note they have rear disks also. (may vary) It might help you to ID something over there perhaps. The "PBR" brand is local by the way.
From memory, the front rotor is 22mm thick. Rear is 10mm.

I would tend to use the same caliper setup if i was to do this also. Whatever caliper you use, you need to make sure that it does not project forward too far. The project on these pages using the turbo engine has Ford rotors which have a much higher hat section than the Magna.

I would prefer to put front and rears on to get a matching "set". Note the rear handbrake cable exits for and aft. Some creative thinking would be needed to adapt to the standard Bellett H/B cable.

Does anybody know:-
1) bore size of single master cyclinder
2) bore size of the later dual master cylinder

a bit off topic (and sacrilege) but:-

MX5 running gear.. what was the conclusion? (i assume engine and g/box)

There are aftermarket turbo kits for them also.

Some more info on TP Magna rotors:-

fronts are RDA221 266 x 24mm { currently brand new on eBay for $59 a pair ! }
(unsure if same type for wagon)


rears: 2 types, sedan and wagon (cost now known 030512)

sedan RDA222 251 x 10mm ($79 pair new)
wagon RDA223 276 x 10mm ($119 pair new)

I wonder if the wagon ones could be fitted to the front on sedan hubs and use GT callipers ??

the 1.6 is what i was thinking you can get 5 or 6 speed after market turbo manifold available. Another option is toyota 4age or 4agze supercharged and am turbo is a option :?: steel sump at the front and starter motor on the same side as bellett.

Nice looking motors.

I was wondering though about fitting one of those small Toyota superchargers to a Bellett engine. They used to be very cheap but now run about $350 or so. Of course, they work better with EFI I guess.

SSS Automotive in Sydney seem to have a few interesting engines, MX5 and Toyota etc etc. Prices < $2000 plus g/box.

you can get one at the right price if you look around enough, last toyota supercharger i bought cost me less than $50. and it was only about 2 years ago.

back on topic though the sigma galant rotor/calliper conversion fits under 13" rims right? just keeping my options open as i am thinking of going back to 13" rims in the near future.

yes, galant sigma is ok for 13" rims.

did you use the supercharger ?

i played with a toyota sc years back there are 2 types sc12/sc14 the 14 is off a 2 litre and the 12 of a mr2 1600 the common one. i ran it on a mitsubishi 2.6 at 5 pound boost with magna efi and a ems computer it went well lots of torgue it was in a swb pajero,i bought a v6 later model as rust cought up with the ol girl, the temptation to sc agian was there this time i used a eaton sc but needed the ems so the 4 cyl story was complete.
The toyota sc are ceremic and do not like a suck through system after all they were designed to pump air not fuel. They have a max rpm of 14000 rpm this sounds a lot but if you don't have the desired boost you need to run larger drive pully or smaller sc pulley this will mean if you want to boost up you lower your max rpm i.e 2:1 7000rpm max engine speed. again a bellett engine at 7000 rpm is enough but if you want 7/8 pound you may need to be 3:1 in the paj it was used for extreme 4wd work and on the 2.6 was 3:1 to get 5 pound,5000 rpm was more stressing the sc but i wanted down low tourque so it was fine.
It would be interesting to play with but for the application and time ect the advantages to turbo over sc would be a better option if it was 4wd i would have another opinion, even turbo a bellett engine would not be worth the effort these day's as cheap reliable hp in modern engines :?: another advantage if it does breakdown repco have mx5 age parts available.

my super charger is going on a 1500cc Austin Lancer motor, was previously run on a mates vr commondore till the v6 decided that it would start the dreaded bottom end knock!
thanks for the confirmation on the brakes too!

aoplogies to those reading this thread for brake info !

Interesting idea i think to use the S/C.
I once had a s/c Commodore (factory model) and was very impressed with it. Low end grunt, which i personally find more rewarding to drive than a screamer engine.

My wife has a Fiesta XR4 (2 litre engine) and I love it.
Max Power: 110kW @ 6000rpm
Max Torque: 190Nm @ 4500rpm
OK not the most powerfull car but the way it torques it's way up a hill etc is fantastic. And torque is what's lacking in the older engines, including Belletts. The Fiesta runs 10.8:1 CR which must help. My Ute has 530NM which is a delight :D :D

Mr GT Orpanage,

Just reading your reply regarding the 13" rims. I am not using the mazda rims on the Bellett, the bellett has them already (some obscure brand from nz) (My car will soon have some photos on the site soon courtesy of Dave - you might see them there).
Still unclear as to whether I can use 13" rims by machining disc (rotor I think you call it) down a bit to make it a smaller diameter, - somebody says on this thread later that you can use the magna rotors with 13" rims with no machining ??

MAZDA MX5 engine is my plan and have donor car and done some measuring. Will fit ok with no sump mods but starter on wrong side. Was going to use the Mazda gearbox too to avoid the hassle of trying to mate the Mazda engine and Isuzu box. Main problem being the ,Mazda gearstick would pop out in the middle of my bench seat - not good!

Solution is to use a Honda s2000 box as there is a shaft on the outside of the box that can be cut to match the bellett gearstick hole. (over here you can't cut any part of the structural pats of the car!).
