Hi everyone Was finding bits to tidy up the dash on the wasp and hopefully get all the gauges working when I came across this ( pic below ) Its out of an early series bellett and to me looks to be original Km/h.....Is that possible Reading the workshop manual it looks like Japanese Cars were Km/h Did any make it to Australia or is this a mock up Josh

I remember reading in an early road test that the journos had been a bit thrown by the km/h speedo fitted to the test car... of course this was at a time when we were still well and truly in miles.
But I don't know how many cars came to Australia with those dials; possibly only the test car, perhaps an initial batch, although Gary's 1964 has a mph speedo, I'm pretty sure.
I will check my Wasp gauge, which is definitely in miles, and see how it compares to that one.

Yours is a Yazaki Dave which is most common. Stranger is I just had a look at my wasp and both are marked Toyo Meter and the speedo has been converted to Km/h. I searched the forum and there was a reference to another wasp with Toyo Gauge but as to Km/h.......no clue! Whats worse the workshop manual describes a change in 65. Josh

My Wasp speedo is Toyo Clock and is Imperial - max. 100 mph. KB

Thanks KB To me it looks like Toyo Clock were early 64/65 and in that same period Yazaki were being phased in!! Hence both types apearing accross that time! As for the Km/h, it looks original and by the sounds of it a bit unusual! Josh

Just to confuse things i have a pr90 speedo 120 mph no yazaki or toyo name no name brand i have 2 others sedan early no name 100mph i have 2 with sedan early with yazaki below warning lights another early with yazaki above the milage The race car no name there is three cars behind the shed a wasp and 2 sedans i will look tomorrow if the snake is happy Lizzies race car i has a after market metric conversion but it is obvios after market.

Thanks for that WOW seem to be no end of combinations. Just pulled the last one out of the shed and its a Yazaki (Bottom of the gauge) Even MORE Confusing my wasp Speedo and Cluster are both Toyo Clock, the dash the Toyo Km/h speedo came out of had the Yazaki Cluster Ultimately the Issue was the temp gauge on my Wasp isnt working and was trying to organise to get the gauge working The problem being the terminals on the Toyo cluster is different from the Yazaki and I think its wired wrong I was hoping to identify the terminals without removing it......but even the 66 workshop only show the terminal positions for the Yazaki cluster Josh

if you earth the wire to the sender to earth with the key it will go to full hot if not the gauge may be a issue if you swap the power and wire to earth and it works it was wired wrong if it still does not work gauge needs repair or replacing you realy have nothing to loose if you experiment in the above order.

Tried those test, Unfortunately there should be 4 leads connected to the cluster but only three seem to be! Fuel gauge works but I also reckon the earthing to the case of the cluster is not good. The other problem is I cant just change the cluster as the earlier fuel gauge works in reverse to the Yazaki and also the Yazaki gauges require a voltage regulator So I reckon removal seems to be required to bench test it The VDO will have to stay a little longer Josh

both of my Wasp's are Toyo Clock'd in MPH, ala KJB's. every other one i've seen amounst us is the same, so yours is the rarity. i'd hazard a guess that yours has been replaced with that KMH one at some stage.
i know some very early sedan's had Toyo's in them and have seen a few around in the past, especially deluxe's, but Yazaki's are the common type in the ones we got. and again, in MPH.

Yeah as you already know, mine is a Yazaki gauge.
Here it is earlier in the year ticking over from 99,999 to 00,000!!!
According to 'Dave' who now owns Bruce A Ruston Signs... when they sold it, it had ticked over 9 times, so that should theoretically make this an unproven MILLION!

Hi Josh, just to add my experience, all Wasps I have known have been Toyo Clock. I have one (only) spare guage cluster, if your guage doesn't work. I reckon that km/h speedo is a genuine JDM Wasp one. SO very rare!

Thanks PR91 and Dave, I greatly appreciate the offer Matt, But ultimately i can use one of the spare Yazaki's and just change the temp part of the cluster, It just means drilling the back of the Cluster, putting in a voltage dropping resister between the fuel and temp gauge and changing the sender! BUT if yours is an original Toyo Clock cluster I would be very much appreciate a photo of the back Josh
