not entirely sure why it would have done it, maybe too much resistance in the connections (dirty connections)?
Glad you didnt loose the car to a fire, maybe some one with more knowledge could help?

Hey Davo
That black wire off of the fuse box goes back directly to the relay & starter solenoid, on the same terminal as the hot side of the battery is on, so this would take some amperage during starting.
electrical problems can be so dodgy ...
good luck dude Mark

Davo those white wires go from the alt to the reg if you unrap that section it will seperate from the loom i think you will fing the light white will be your charge light and the fat black will be your power supply to the fuse box. You will need to check other wires bundled in the loom to confirm they are not melted together. I run a fuseable link from the power supply to the fuse box to prevent this. The problem is the wire from the battery or starter solinoid is always live and it has no weak link until it leaves the fuse box, a fuseable link looks like wire so it will not effect the standard look that you are trying to achieve. They come in different colours for the right amps get some advise from a auto electician as i have estimated what amps i have used. You will see in the photo above the 2 on the date this wire is 2 inches of fusable link in the event that the main power supply to the fuse box fails this 2 inch piece of wire should burn out before any other damage can occur. Your car may be a little different as i cant remember the set up as i think it was a later engine set up than the teardrop But it just needs to go as close as you can to the power supply.

Maybe have a look at a local wrecking yard to see what car has an alternator that looks close to fitting? correct me if im wrong but are there alternators now with internal regulators, and some with external? Sorry auto electrical is not one of my strong points!

$600 seems a heck of a lot. i have no idea what the fault actually is, but those regulators and alternators are pretty reliable normally. But it might be faulty and I would just replace it with a used one and fit new wire. With a fuse or fusable link perhaps at the battery end. Maybe another Bellett Alt. also, to make sure.
