Diff and CV Joints

Hi guys,

May be time to take the plunge and do something about the clunking diff soon, thanks to some work coming in. The left side rear clunks at low speed, vibrates noticeably at high speed and I'm confident it is a CV joint...can anyone tell me, are they an Isuzu part, common with any other car, or can be machined to take something common?

Duane sorry to disappoint you if you were after a challenge ;) boring 6 cylinder holden will fit no machining just pop em in. I use hardy spicer solids as they take a good flogging but are non grease able. I think they are all the same early holden h model

HQ Holden in fact. Tailshaft unis.
6 cylinder version is identical. V8 version is a bit thicker in the cross piece.
I use the V8 ones in the race car and 6 banger ones in the rest.
And while you're at it, do both side and the tailshaft. All 4 are the same type.

been having similar 'noises' in my Sport. [driving me nuts] Clunks at very slow speed, both starting off and slowing down, a resonance at about 95kph.

Don't discount the brakes ...... my left hand side shoes seem to be picking up on the drum, even though they are new and radiused to the drums.
I filed a little off the end of the shoes. eg LH side, bottom of the leading shoe, top of the trailing shoe. Now much improved.
Still to investigate futher though why as RH side is fine.

Sport has no rear Uni in the tailshaft.

You'd want to be damn sure the diff is spot on straight and square to the gearbox!

That's my issue to the letter. Due for a service soon, so I'll get the mechanic to cast an eye over it to make sure...I either have no time or no money, so just want to get it done as fast/cheap as possible.

Late Belletts have no rear Uni. But do have a rubber 'donut'.

Didn't know that. Learn something everyday.
Those rubber donuts do breakdown over time tho, like all rubber items. Prob easier to replace it with a normal uni'd Bellett shaft at that time I'd reckon.

mmm lots of little differences Brett like the flange on the half shaft is round and 3 bolts if I remember right. the bonnet catch takes only 2 bolts. inner top door trim only has 3 screw holes, the trim over the boots number plate light has only 3 screws and many more things. the gtr in the older model has features that are standard on the later model also making a later model easy to replicate a gtr.

Haven't ever looked under a really late ones so haven't seen those things, but had picked the little things on trims and the like over the years tho.
Shows they just never stopped mucking around and changing things.

A lot of things are not that simple to pick up unless you study it. It is obvious when you pull a part that is already done up from your parts supply and it no fit :oops: :shock: then :lol:

too true ! Like altering number of screws etc. The half shaft flange on mine though has 4 bolts but seems different type to my older Belletts.

Luckily in my case, the donut was split but the car had a NOS item in the boot. Now fitted.

another little thing, my car has a bracket in the RH side above the gas pedal area for an emergency flare. On the strengthening bracket late cars have. Also has the flare too ! It's also shown in the Owners Handbook so is original.

Isuzu thinks of everything .....greg norman pulls into a service station in outback Australia in the latest Isuzu bellett says to the young bloke fill er up and could you give the inside of the car a quick vacuum ..the young blokes in awe of the gt and is all over it greg tells him everything its got and does ..the young fellas in the car hes vacuuming out the car and picks up some golf tees laying on the floor ...mr norman what are these for ..and quick as a flash .''.they are for resting your balls on son'' ...'' geez Isuzu thinks of everything ...........................

Bought uni's, booked the car in...mechanic reports no issues with the current uni's, shafts, diff or brakes. Stuffed if I know what's going on, but I suspect he may not have had a very close look at the diff.
