Hello,
I am new to your forum and wish to seek advice from people in the know on this forum. I owned a 1966 Tear Drop Bellett during the period 1969 to 1973 and it was fitted with a twin cam motor in 1971 whilst we were in Port Moresby. We returned to Australia in 1972 I traded it in on a brand new GTR XU1 in August 1973. I got $150 for it. Still have the XU1 to this day. I have attached a picture of my old Bellett and am looking to buy a GT-R from Japan but would like to converse with someone who knows what they are looking at and perhaps guide me. I have found a car that looks in very good condition but want to make sure everything is correct before I splash out. Any help given would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

peter

Hi
I bought in two Bellett's in 2012. When I say "I", I found 2 cars from one seller on Yahoo auctions (Japan) after looking for some time. But Jason, who is on this group, did all the leg work for me. Ideally you need somebody in Japan to look over the car and take a zillion pictures. Be aware though that even with that, you can still buy a car riddled with rust for example that has been covered over. The main car I bought in required new sills to be fitted for example. The 2nd car was a parts car but repairable.

Its best also to buy a car that can be driven. And has brakes in good condition, that way the car can come on roll on/roll off ships. Mine was a non runner and had to come in via container. This adds a lot of cost. Also, depending on where the car is located, it can be very costly to move the car in Japan to the port.

I sold the 2nd car after a while as I had nowhere to store it. It's now in Queensland and may possibly be available along with a 2litre DOHC engine and gearbox.

You also need an import certificate to bring it in, AFTER buying it. That took 6 or 7 weeks from memory.

Keep in mind any car of that era will definately need some work done on it when it arrives. I have had the brakes done, diff fitted with new bearings, clutch replaced etc. My car is shown below, a 2 door sedan with all GT mechanicals, from factory.

There are only 3 of these known to be in Aus. Mine and one in NSW are on the road. The one I sold is in QLD.

Hi Glen and Dave,

Thank you for your replies most helpful. Shows how much I know never knew a two door sedan like that existed it is a nice looking car. Glen you mention that your second car that you sold may be for sale do you have a contact for this?

Do not mind a bit of work as long as the car is not a basket case, I have restored many cars and feel it is time to revisit my youth and add a Bellett to the list.

I have attached a link to the GTR I found perhaps you can tell me what your thoughts are e.g. is it real, price etc.

It looks pretty nice in the pics. I would say it's had a respray at some time too. Which may or may not cover up some issues. Belletts typically rust in not so easily seen places for example, like at the base of the A pillars which sometimes can be seen by looking up inside the rear of the front guards. Bottom of the guards and in rear quarter panels behind the rear wheels. etc etc. Often bogged over. Under the battery box, base of the front shock towers and into the frame rails. Most usually repairable if present. Interior is a little tatty so will need obvious seat repairs etc. That blue basket weave material will be very hard to find, if at all. Engine condition unknown.

I don't know exact numbers but I think around 1100 GTR's were built. And copies abound like "GT Ford Falcons"!
