guys and girls.... a 1968 1/2 -1969 GT that has been unknown to us all has recently turned up in Melbourne, and is now in the hands of a well known Bellett enthusiast. i have seen the car myself, and while it needs a full resto, believe me when i say that it's a very good starting base, and most importantly, it's complete. the point i'm making here is that there are cars out there to be found, and even tho this one actually found 'us', it proves that if you keep looking long and hard enuf, they still do turn up! i'll see if i can get some pics of this 'new' GT soon. cheers.

they certainly are out there i have found 2 gts in 2 yrs one is now at gt orphanage restored i got this out of an add in the trading post ...wanted belett 2door 4 door or wagon ....i got 2 calls one was the gt a daily driver in brissie the other was a car wreck in ipswich (parts) the other gt from sydney someone advertised a gt console .....strange? contacted the guy he had the gt sitting there its now at murwillumbah ...i have up my sleeve at the moment 2 cars one 35.000 miles the other 70.000 miles still fishing on those they are both great cars .... so yes they are out there patience ....prevails ...regards dave in qld

neil, this one came up as a real surpirise. it was located in an inner melbourne suburb within walking distance of the CBD, but none of us knew it even existed! i agree that the rural areas are a better source of finding things tho, but i guess you just never know where they can hide sometimes. dave, i'm with you on those 2 mate, especially the express (wagon). the only prob with a 2 door sedan or an express is that they never came here........ having said that tho, 2 door's do pop up in japan, but the express is rarer than hen's teeth.... but i know where one is for a possible japanese spending spree!

There was an early model GT that lived in Westbury in northern Tasmania up until about the late 80s.
I know this because the young guy who owned it would sometimes ask my father for mechanical advice as he lived just up the road.
I think he was trying to source some main engine bearings for it and i seem to remember that it was a red one but didn't take a lot of interest in those days as i had other things to occupy my mind. The owner moved to Melbourne and took it with him.
that's the end of the story.....

that's the end of the story..... the car still exists, with the same owner. is actually the brother of the new owner that bought the 68.5/69 GT that started this thread! the PR90 was a melbourne car, went to tas. with him, and returned to melbourne as mentioned. it has been under restoration for a long time now. last time i saw it (about 3 years ago), it was in primer, but i'm told it remains that way today. and no, he won't sell it!

Oh the little buggers are out there alright. When I was a youngster, our friend 'oz_toffa' got me right into GT's. I was pretty keen on finding more. It's funny you mention these "Gruchie", my gut has just sunk 10 fathoms reading : "a gunmetal grey one, (owned by a panelbeater) Never seen since...."
If this was a panelbeater somewhere close to Windsor Gardens, then it's the mint original one (with a red interior) I bought off him for $2,500 in 1988. He called it an exotic thing that no one knew much about, but his wife enjoyed driving it. He wanted to get rid of it as it was time to upgrade!!
Sadly though it was "never seen since... it cartwheeled into a paddock near Pt. Pirie with me in it" (young, stupid, didn't respect what I had) As mentioned in "my bellett" although it was a rightoff, the sheer toughness of the shell saved my ass and I got out of it with no more than a damaged ego. I have but one photo of her in tackt.

The restored "bluie" I have now is one I bought one and a half years later, off a TAA pilot who drove it to and from the Airport and home in Kensington for 20 odd years, never sheded, or serviced it. It was an original, badly crows footed bluey green metalic with the after market black vinyl leather look roof. Most of the running gear ( and lots of other bits ) is from the Gunmetal one that I transffered, including engine as that one was knackered but still managed a "knocky" 55 mph.
Only recently a good mechanic down the road said, when he saw mine :"oh yeah, there's this Italian guy who lives out toward Gawler who has three of those sitting around his yard and doesn't drive them. Bought them way back cause he though they were cool". I ask :"not sedans were they ?" he replies : "no, coupes". I've got to see him soon about a handbrake cable, time to ask more questions,
And yeah, of the 260 or so that hit the shores of Oz....hiding in sheds, lurking in grassy paddocks or in a thicket of trees......ther've gotta be out there.........

B. ta for the update B. sounds like u can account for one of the cars duane mentioned. hate to be a stickler, but the import number was 290.... not 260. i reckon there's probably 50 left in reasonable condition, and a few more that will only ever be parts donors.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere...I think we've found a couple.
1. Troy's car = found! 2. Beaten up gunmetal grey one that I test drove = found? Sounds a lot like GTtoo's parts car (it did have a tired motor, and no brakes). Is the shell still alive?
Digging deep into my grey matter, the chap who owned the car that languished in a carport was Andy Rasheed. Interestingly, I knew of an Andy Rasheed who was a film-maker, actually a mate of Troy's (also a film-maker). However, I believe Troy bought the car as a complete runner (i.e. not a resurrected non-runner) and would have mentioned Andy. They could possibly be the same car.
I went to uni between 1989 and 1993, so the Windsor Gardens panel beater's car doesn't sound like the same one. The chap's name was George, he was a Greek guy, same as my mate from Uni. He still had the car in the early 1990's. However, he did buy it as a write-off (front end, so it had a sedan grille - I never saw this car).
The metallic blue car is hard to tell, as I saw it in the early 2000's, it certainly wasn't a basket case, or a speedway car, but may have become since. If I remember correctly, it was a PR91 (single headlamp).
I remember hearing about the vinyl roof metallic blue car owned by a pilot too...thought it was an urban myth. I also heard an SA dealer was fitting vinyl roofs to late GT's from new - anyone confirm?
What a community, eh? If we don't find all these buggers one day, I'll be very surprised.

I wonder what Rod knows about Tassie ones?
In my experience there are cars (althought the volume is not big) that land in Tassie and stay because prosepective buyers can't be bothered with the transport involved in getting one back to the northern island.
By the way - someone will kill me for this - I sighted a Wasp parked next to a shed in rural Tassie not so long ago but now can't for the life of me remember where!!!! Andrew

i believe theres not many in tassie, theres mine 68 gt, theres 2 4 doors in launceston i met him when we got our screens fom club ,and some one told me theres 1 gt in launceston also but havent seen it ? there prob more out there who knows ?

hi andrew they are in tassie i saw a florian in a driveway just outside beecheno last year while on hollidays seing some of the finest country in australia (im hooked on tassie) i left a note on the windscreen to no avail it was all there unregd tho if you want i can get you an exact address i too will have to refresh my memory cheers davo in qld

Gt's - I've hardly seen any except I think a few years ago I saw a silver grey one in Sandy Bay Road near the Casino - passing by - it may have been a mainland car on tour - any of you mainlanders been over here ?
Sedans - I rang a lady who had a white 65 original ("well worn but worn well") registered and driveable but she wanted $3000 for it. I gave up but found out a while ago from someone who knew her that she ended up selling it very cheaply.
Along the West Tamar Hwy there is a collection of five sedans all kept outside - one with a Gemini conversion, a nice looking original 66-67ish model and the remainder are complete but restorable "donors". I've spoken with the owner who realises that to keep his on the road he needs spares and therefore won't part with any - understandable enough.
there is also an original but sadly neglected tear drop tail light model in a paddock next to a house in Westbury, N Tas. but it isn't for sale as the owner is "going to do her up one day".

I look forward to ONE DAY, The amount of cars and otherthings that are going to happen on that day will be wonderful, it's a bit like trying to buy spare parts or any car parts, they are alway in the wharehouse in Melbourne, my next visit to Melbourne I would like to go and have a look at THE wharehouse , it must be enormous.
